Turmeric is the spicy star in the superfood sky and yet has remained down to earth. This is because the golden yellow tuber impresses above all with its inner values! Its bright color brings sunshine to every dish. Curries, lentil dishes and risottos in particular can't get enough of the sweet and tangy turmeric root. Tip: briefly sauté in oil or ghee before cooking!

It all began in 1988 with an idea from Johannes Gutmann. The rest is history. SONNENTOR is now one of the most successful Austrian companies - even though, or perhaps precisely because, the clocks run differently here. The usual path in the 1980s - away from the countryside and towards the city - was not his cup of tea. On the contrary, Hannes wanted to work and live in the Waldviertel.

But taking over the Gutmann farm was not an option for him. He wanted to break new ground that would not only benefit him, but also the region. Especially the farmers, who were struggling to survive economically. Many were converting their farms to monoculture because that was the way things were done back then. Gutmann thought there had to be another way. Above all, he felt sorry for the wonderful herbs that grew in the fields, which were plucked up and thrown away.
Organic right from the start.
Johannes was already a passionate organic advocate when the word "organic" didn't even exist. In the 1980s, people generally didn't think too much about food - where it came from, what was in it or how it was grown - "yo eh". Gutmann, however, had a sense that organic was the best way for health, the environment and our future. And so he had a brilliant idea.
An idea that was neither welcomed with open arms nor enthusiasm. Selling regional organic products together under the umbrella of the laughing sun - an old Waldviertel symbol? His "crazy idea" was ridiculed in 1988. So the 23-year-old moved from farmers' market to farmers' market as a one-man business with his herbs, and soon became a "colorful dog". In addition to the first-class organic products, his trademarks - decades-old lederhosen and round red glasses - helped him make his breakthrough.
